Excellent, 20 Aug 2011

This is my first espresso machine and I did a lot of research before settling on it. I was a little concerned about the recent reviews concerning the revised baskets, but I haven’t had a problem using them. I have however ordered the original Gaggia ones from happydonkey, so that I can develop the traditional skills for perfecting crema (hopefully!).
I love the industrial look of the machine, it’s so much more stylish than the glossy plastic ones out there trying to look retro.

There have been one or two negative reviews for this machine, stating that the build quality is not there since Philips took over Gaggia. Honestly, I have no idea what these problems can be… I’ve waited a good few months before writing this review so as to allow time to really live with the Gaggia. In a nutshell, it’s reliable, attractive, and makes extremely good coffee. I bought it to replace a Krups unit I’d had, and used every day, for about 12 years. I didn’t think I’d be able to get a machine to touch the trusty Krups but I’m pleased to bits with the Gaggia. Again, I use it every single day and it gives me consistently good espresso. I don’t use pods so I can’t comment on that aspect, but with ground coffee the Gaggia produces excellent coffee IF YOU TAMP IT PROPERLY. It’s taken a bit of trial and error to find the perfect amount of coffee and pressure to pack into the service cup, and I’ve found that I need to pack it very firmly compared to my last machine, but now that I’ve sussed it out I really couldn’t be happier with the results this machine gives. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
