This is my first espresso machine and I did a lot of research before settling on it. I was a little concerned about the recent reviews concerning the revised baskets, but I haven’t had a problem using them. I have however ordered the original Gaggia ones from happydonkey, so that I can develop the traditional skills for perfecting crema (hopefully!).
I love the industrial look of the machine, it’s so much more stylish than the glossy plastic ones out there trying to look retro.

Very good indeed…, 4 Aug 2011

There have been one or two negative reviews for this machine, stating that the build quality is not there since Philips took over Gaggia. Honestly, I have no idea what these problems can be… I’ve waited a good few months before writing this review so as to allow time to really live with the Gaggia. In a nutshell, it’s reliable, attractive, and makes extremely good coffee. I bought it to replace a Krups unit I’d had, and used every day, for about 12 years. I didn’t think I’d be able to get a machine to touch the trusty Krups but I’m pleased to bits with the Gaggia. Again, I use it every single day and it gives me consistently good espresso. I don’t use pods so I can’t comment on that aspect, but with ground coffee the Gaggia produces excellent coffee IF YOU TAMP IT PROPERLY. It’s taken a bit of trial and error to find the perfect amount of coffee and pressure to pack into the service cup, and I’ve found that I need to pack it very firmly compared to my last machine, but now that I’ve sussed it out I really couldn’t be happier with the results this machine gives. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

GAGGIA CLASSIC REVIEW, 20 July 2011

A great machine. We wanted a quality coffee machine without all the fancy features that can go wrong & this machine is exactly that. Never tasted better coffee

Gaggia Brera saves energy when not in use because it automatically switches to standby mode after one hour, then uses less than one watt per hour when in standby mode. If you’re concerned about your energy consumption, Brera can help you save energy as well as make great coffee.

Excellent, 30 July 2011

I was torn between this and a slightly cheaper Siemens machine. After using my sister’s Gaggia Brera I was swayed by this machine’s ease of use. It makes almost perfect coffee – but has some drawbacks which prevents me from giving it 5 stars:
- It turns to standby and rinses after about an hour of non-use. When you turn it back on to make coffee it rinses again. Which means during the day it uses a lot of (hot) water just to rinse itself. This depletes the machine’s very limited water reservoir. (It does mean, however, that the machine is kept, internally, fairly clean automatically.)
- The water reservoir is very small. This means that it needs two or three (or more) refills a day which is quite fiddly. You also have to be careful that you don’t spill too much water whilst refilling it. However it is a domestic appliance so needs to be relatively small and the compromise that makes this possible, I assume, is the small tank.
- The metal drip tray cover is very easily scratched. Because of the numerous rinsing cycles (see above) the fairly large drip tray would fill up quickly if you don’t put something under the water nozzle. Initially I had a small metal jug to catch the rinse water (to save emptying the drip tray too often) but this has scratched the tray cover spoiling the look of the machine slightly – at this price you want it to look good! A small ceramic cup is better.
I have found, however, that the weekly cleaning of the machine’s internal mechanism is much easier than other reviewers have suggested, as long as you follow the instructions. (I haven’t descaled yet – and am not looking forward to this bearing in mind other reviews!)
I think that the problems with the machine are minor and are due largely to its small, domestic, size.
Using it is sometimes a bit fiddly – but on the whole the results are brilliant! And it really is quite amazing how quickly and with minimal effort you can get a 5 star cup of coffee.

Very Impressed, 7 July 2011

Replacing our previous Delonghi ESAM4200.8 1 bean-to-cup machine, I was unsure of what to expect from this Gaggia.
The reviews are generally good, but for the money I was unsure if it would be cheap and plastic looking.
On the upside machine is petit, the coffee is very good and the steamer can be used almost instantly after or before the coffee dispenser. Previously I had to wait an age. The look of the machine is good and I have no qualms about it looking cheap. It looks dinky and a bit sexy. The dials are as easy to understand as your first ABC and offer a great deal of flexibility. The machine is considerably quieter than my previous model – which of course could simply mean my previous model was loud! However I have been impressed by how quiet it is.
Downsides? Well two and a half mugs of coffee and you have to fill up the small water tank. We use the filer so there’s even less space than normal. The coffee grinds section and water overflow need changing regularly; to the extent I now fill up/empty after each use. Is this a pain? Yes, but not so bad once you get into a pattern.
The milk frother is quick and powerful but for some reason I can’t get a flat white style consistency easily. The wand is nicely placed and easy to use but the tip-top perfect milk drink is hard to attain. I have done it and it can be done, but it requires patience. I can’t just prop my milk jug onto the top of a mug and wander off as I used to do. This baby demands your attention for such intricate operations.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes I would. The coffee is better than the previous model (albeit this one is pricer), it looks good, is very quiet and so far (four months) given me no reason to complain.
I am impressed.

Smart looking, compact machine. A wee bit slower than I had anticipated but gets the job done. Would def recommend it.

Woo, hoo, etc, 13 April 2011

I have a Gaggia Baby Class D. Lovely machine, makes great espresso if you feed it Illy coffee, which I generally do. But a while ago, it started to have problems with pushing water through the head. I descaled it with the Gaggia powdered stuff, which made no difference at all. Hardly a trickle came through the brew head. I found this on Amazon a few days ago, and thought it was worth a try.
And it certainly was. After blasting some steam through the wand (which I don’t normally use, as I’m a pure espresso kind of person), I pressed the manual button. There was a bit of noise, then water started to flow – at first a trickle, then a proper flow. Blockage cleared!
I’ll be getting some more of this and using it every few months as preventative maintenance.

Great product, shame about the translation!, 26 Feb 2011

Our wonderful Gaggia Baby had stopped dispensing espresso completely, so i tried dismantling the likely bits, and cleaning them up. Once re-assembled, disappointly there was still no flow at all from the espresso outlets. So I tried this product as a last resort.
I found the english translation of the instructions somewhat confusing, and I came close to burning myself with the steam-wand as a result. Anyway, after some trial and error I discovered how to flush through the considerable quantity of diluted descaler, followed by several litres of clean water. It took about 2 hrs in all. However, our Gaggia Baby is now reborn and fully functional!!
I think I will now use this descaler every year (not 6 months as recommended on product, as a preventative. It certainly works brilliantly!

New life for a dying La Pavoni!, 10 Jan 2011

So pleased I tried this. Thought that my Pavoni Eurobar was consigned to the skip – had nothing to loose. The descaler has breathed new life into the machine…frothing like never before. Feel silly that I never descaled my poor machine earlier – obvious really. I rang a local kitchen shop which sells Pavoni plus other top end machines, they didn’t supply any descalers but did try to flog me a new machine — grrr! Well worth a go.
